Vivitrol is the trade name for naltrexone, an opiate blocker similar to naloxone found in Suboxone. This form is given by injection once a month. It is effective in blocking the cravings for opiates thereby reducing relapses. This medicine has a very good safety profile and cannot cause addiction. Before this medication can be used, there has to be a period up to 2 weeks being free of all opiate medicines, including Suboxone, and alcohol.
An oral form of this drug is used for alcohol addiction. The oral form is given daily.
The down-side of this medicine is its cost. The price of the medicine can range from $1200-1500 per monthly injection. Due to this, many insurance companies do not want to pay for the medicine.
This, as with other medications, must be used with a regular schedule of counseling.
