The Cincinnati area is no stranger to a high rate of opiate overdoses. Recently, there were 24 overdose emergency calls made in the area. Health officials attribute this spike to the synthetic opioid, fentanyl. Fentanyl is a highly potent substance that is often found mixed in heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, etc. Even a small amount of fentanyl can lead to sudden death. Many drug-users do not even know that what they are using contains fentanyl, increasing the risk for overdose.
Officials urge people to carry Narcan, the overdose reversal. Here at Sunrise Treatment Center, our patients receive Narcan to take home with them on their first day of treatment. Many lives have been saved by the Narcan distributed just at Sunrise.
Drug-use is even more life-threatening with the increasing prevalence of fentanyl-laced drugs. Our hope is that more and more people turn to help at treatment centers such as Sunrise. Patients are prescribed a medication and safely monitored to help treat their opiate addiction, decreasing exposure to the deadly fentanyl on the streets.
