Vivitrol is the trade name for naltrexone, an opiate blocker similar to the naloxone found in Suboxone. This form is given by injection once a month and is somewhat effective in blocking the cravings for opiates to reduce the likelihood of relapsing to active opiate use. Vivitrol does not have a risk of creating physical dependence.
There are two major challenges to using this medication. First, before this medication can be administered, there has to be a period of atleast two weeks without having used any alcohol or opiates. This includes most treatment medications. Second, the price of the medicine can range from $1,200 - 1,500 per monthly injection, so many insurance companies do not want to pay for it.
