Comprehensive Mental Health Care for Every Stage of Healing

Finding peace and healing isn't easy, but you don't have to face it alone. Whether you're struggling with anxiety, depression, or simply feel overwhelmed by life's challenges, our compassionate team is here to walk beside you. Every person's journey is unique, and we'll listen to your story with care and without judgment.

According to the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use & Health, 47.6 million adults in America age 18 and older had some form of mental illness. Of those, 9.2 million also had a substance use disorder, which is nearly half of the total number of people struggling with addiction. Unfortunately, accessibility to care is limited by stigma, transportation challenges, affordability, insurance barriers, and an inadequate network of providers.

With the demand for mental health care far exceeding the supply of providers, Sunrise pursued and achieved certification in 2018 to provide mental health services in-house to our substance use disorder patients with co-occurring mental health diagnoses. In 2025, we expanded this program, and we are now accepting new mental health patients who do not have a co-occurring substance abuse disorder. By combining the expertise of our medical team with our qualified mental health clinicians, we have significantly reduced these barriers to care.

Diagnostic and Assessment Services

Services include complete diagnostic and biopsychosocial assessments with both clinical and medical professionals. Treatment with psychotherapeutic prescription medications is initiated where indicated and appropriate under the direction of our medical team. Follow-up sessions at varying intervals with both the therapist and our medical team continue to set treatment plan goals, titrate medication to proper dosages, monitor progress, and adjust treatment when necessary.

Sometimes symptoms of an underlying physical health problem can be confused as a mental health diagnosis. If that is a concern, then referrals will be made to outside primary care providers for additional evaluation and testing. We're also happy to coordinate care for our patients with existing mental health providers or refer to other outside providers as needed.

Ultimately, the primary goals with every patient are threefold:

  1. Make an accurate diagnosis
  2. Determine an effective course of treatment
  3. Stabilize the patient with a combination of therapy and medication (where indicated)

Treatment Approaches

Outpatient Counseling Services

At Sunrise, individual counseling forms the cornerstone of our outpatient counseling approach. Our clinicians work one-on-one with patients to create personalized treatment plans with specific, measurable goals that serve as a roadmap for recovery. The schedule for visits will vary based on the services being provided and the individual's needs.

Our approach is grounded in proven therapeutic methods. We utilize evidence-based interventions, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, and integrated treatment models that address both mental health and substance use concerns simultaneously. This comprehensive approach has been shown to produce better outcomes than treating these conditions separately, particularly for individuals managing co-occurring disorders.

Mood Disorders and Anxiety Treatment

Anxiety and mood disorders are among the most common mental health challenges we treat. Our psychiatric nurse practitioners and physicians provide comprehensive diagnostic evaluations followed by tailored treatment plans that may include therapy, medication management, or a combination of both. We recognize that these conditions often coexist with substance use concerns, and our integrated services address all aspects of mental wellness.

Trauma-Informed Care

Trauma-informed care is essential for individuals whose mental health challenges stem from past experiences. Our trained professionals are equipped with clinical training in approaches that acknowledge the impact of trauma on mental health and addiction, creating a safe therapeutic environment where healing can begin.

Telehealth Mental Health Services

Sunrise offers mental health online services for patients who need flexible access to care. Connect with our clinicians through secure telehealth appointments for individual counseling sessions and medication management consultations. Our virtual care provides the same quality, compassionate treatment as in-person visits, allowing you to receive support from the comfort and privacy of your own home.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

For patients requiring additional structure and support, we offer an intensive outpatient program (IOP) that adds extended group sessions to the individual counseling experience. Our 16-week curriculum provides a minimum of 9 hours of services per week, combining group therapy with individual counseling to address underlying issues and develop healthy coping mechanisms.

IOP consists of group sessions 3 days per week for 3 hours per day. In addition, IOP participants receive one hour of individual counseling per week. Patients being treated with medications will also meet with the medical providers at least once a month while in IOP.

IOP Hours:

  • Morning Group: M/T/W/H 7:30 am - 10:00 am
  • Afternoon Group: M/T/W/H 12:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Group therapy creates powerful opportunities for connection and shared learning. Participants benefit from peer support while developing skills to manage their mental health challenges. We encourage all patients to also engage with community-based recovery groups, where they can establish ongoing support networks.

Co-Occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders

The high rate of co-occurring mental health illnesses in the population of people struggling with substance use disorders requires an integrated approach to treatment. Sunrise's model of care addresses both conditions simultaneously through coordinated services with our medical and clinical teams.

For patients with co-occurring disorders, treatment may involve medication-assisted treatment for substance use disorder combined with psychiatric medication management and counseling for mental health conditions. This comprehensive approach has proven more effective than treating these conditions in isolation.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Sunrise offers a partial hospitalization program (PHP) for those who need a higher level of care than traditional outpatient counseling. PHP is often a natural second step in the treatment process for those who have successfully completed an inpatient or residential treatment program. It is also an appropriate intervention as an intermediate step to attempt to keep an individual from having to move to an inpatient care setting.

This program provides a blend of outpatient individual and group counseling services with appropriate medical supervision. The partial hospitalization program is ideal for those who require intensive behavioral health services but are stable enough to return home at the end of each day. This level of care bridges the gap between inpatient care and outpatient treatment, allowing participants to continue receiving the support they need while transitioning back to their daily lives.

PHP services are currently available at our Portsmouth location.
