Sunrise Treatment Center Acquires Port 45 Recovery

CINCINNATI, OH — October 8th, 2021 — Sunrise Treatment Center (“Sunrise”) is proud to announce the completion of the acquisition of Port 45 Recovery, LLC (“Port 45”). The combination of the two businesses creates a leading model for comprehensive outpatient addiction treatment in Ohio and Kentucky.

Port 45 was founded in 2016 and has locations in Portsmouth and Columbus, Ohio. It offers treatment through a variety of programs that include partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, traditional outpatient, aftercare, and recovery housing. Sunrise is an outpatient, substance abuse treatment program focused primarily on opioid use disorders throughout Ohio and Kentucky. Sunrise and Port 45 combined will greatly enhance the service offering to each of the two companies’ patients and enable them to be served in a more comprehensive manner.

Sunrise has been able to expand and grow in recent years to serve more communities in need of addiction treatment services. There are roughly 1.27 million Americans now receiving medication-assisted treatment at over 14,000+ facilities located throughout the United States, but the country’s opioid problem still persists.  In the most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health, nearly 19 million Americans are estimated to meet criteria for a substance use disorder and over 95% are not accepting of their diagnoses. Those with opioid use disorders continue to suffer fatal consequences of their inaction given that approximately two-thirds of drug-overdose deaths involved an opioid in 2018 alone. Because of the efforts of Sunrise and others, Ohio has improved from the second highest drug overdose death rate in the United States in 2018 to the fourth highest, below California, Florida, and Pennsylvania.

Sunrise’s Chief Executive Officer and Founder, Dr. Jeffrey Bill, commented: “Sunrise is grounded in two guiding principles: providing high-quality, comprehensive addiction treatment services to its patients, and implementing best practices to employ people in a way that is equitable and life-sustaining.  We are thrilled to be adding a company in Port 45 that perfectly matches our culture and allows us to expand our menu of outpatient services in a complementary way.”

Sharon Staley, the Chief Executive Officer of Port 45 Recovery, stated: “Sunrise implies the core values and heart for the patient that Port 45 has been so known for.  This union will allow both companies to merge their passion into one and become a treatment center with many more capabilities to address this horrible disease of addiction.”

Ed Niemczyk, Partner at Bridges Fund Management, remarked: “The combination of Sunrise and Port 45 will provide the residents of Ohio and Kentucky with a high-quality, comprehensive treatment option that is fresh, innovative, and efficient. The resulting model will further cement Sunrise as a leading provider of addiction treatment in the United States and a model in which can be expanded nationwide.”

Sunrise is backed by Bridges Fund Management, a lower middle-market private equity fund focused exclusively on sustainable and impact investments.   Bridges invested alongside the existing management team in 2019.
